South Tyneside increases public security with Sony and USS

Weybridge, UK
Universal Systems Solutions (USS), a security solutions supplier based in the North East of England, announces the introduction of a new range of wireless mobile security street lights, equipped with Sony Professional's SNC-RZ50P pan tilt zoom (PTZ) IP video security cameras. The detachable security-enabled lantern heads, which can be fitted to and powered by any streetlamp, are due to be trialled in South Tyneside as part of a Safer South Tyneside CDRP and USS Partnership, where they are using them as a cost effective way to quickly scale-up video surveillance using existing street infrastructure.

Brian Fascione, Technical Director USS Group, explained the benefits of this technology: "The IP PTZ cameras from Sony are ideally suited to this kind of covert security solution. They can be accessed remotely across a 3G, Mesh or Data Wi-Fi network and have intelligent video capabilities built into the camera's head, which filters video at source and keeps strain on bandwidth to a minimum. As a result the MCG streetlight features cutting-edge intelligent video security that is easy to fit and completely mobile."

Sony's SNC-RZ50P camera incorporates pan, tilt and 26x optical zoom capability to provide large field of view and a combination of overview and detail. Sony's SNC-RZ50P camera can also generate MPEG4 and JPEG images or H.264 and JPEG images simultaneously While JPEG stream can be recorded and monitored locally where available bandwidth is sufficient, MPEG4 can be transmitted over the Internet even under limited bandwidth.

Mike Cole, video security sales manager, Sony Professional, explained why Sony's SNC-RZ50P PTZ cameras were ideally suited for this integration. "Sony's PTZ cameras are equipped with visibility enhancing technology to improve performance in high contrast lighting environments making them ideal for day and night surveillance and USS' requirements. The cameras cover a 340 degree radius and have an optical zoom of up to 300 yards, enabling discrete surveillance at a distance. Better still, to ensure that strain on bandwidth is kept to a minimum Sony has integrated intelligent video capabilities into the camera's head, which filters raw video at source and eases data transmission across wireless networks."

Sony's SNC-RZ50P PTZ cameras are enabled with Sony's Distributed Enhanced Processing Architecture (DEPA). DEPA-enabled security cameras use Intelligent trip wires, Motion Detection (IMD) and Intelligent Object Detection (IOD) to pre-process raw video streams. IMD is a motion-detection technology that can distinguish between "real" movement and "environmental movement", such as a tree blowing in the wind. IOD detects any object that enters or exits a camera's field of view and alerts security when pre-programmed rules are broken. DEPA technology filters video streams and reduces the frequency of false alarms.
